Yahoo Japan, Japan’s largest Internet portal operator, will adopt Google’s search engine, refusing to follow Yahoo Inc in choosing Microsoft as a partner.
Yahoo Japan, which currently uses Yahoo Inc’s search technology, and Google together would control almost all of the search market in the world’s second-biggest economy.
The deal stands in stark contrast to the decision by Yahoo Inc, which owns roughly one-third of Yahoo Japan, to integrate its search technology with Microsoft after the U.S. government blocked a potential tie-up with Google.
Yahoo Japan, which hopes the deal will strengthen its No. 1 position in the domestic market, will also adopt Google’s search-linked advertisement delivery system and feed its data to Google sites.
The deal was seen by some as underscoring Microsoft’s weaker position in search.
”If this Yahoo Japan and Google partnership works well, other search engine and portal site players all over the world may start adopting Google’s technology,” said Mitsushige Akino, chief fund manger at Ichiyoshi Investment Management.
At a news conference, Yahoo Japan President Masahiro Inoue said the Japanese firm had after a thorough investigation concluded that Microsoft’s search technology was not sufficiently strong enough for its needs, giving Japanese language search capabilities as one example.
Yahoo Japan shares gained 1.2 percent on reports of an imminent deal while the broader market was flat. The announcement came after the close of trading hours.
Yahoo Japan said in a statement Yahoo Inc will remain a strategic partner for the Japanese portal site and the U.S. firm will maintain its stake. Yahoo Japan will still use the Yahoo brand.
The Japanese firm also said it has confirmed with the Japanese government that the partnership with Google will not violate antitrust regulations.
Yahoo Inc, Yahoo Japan’s second-biggest shareholder after Softbank Corp, signed a 10-year deal with Microsoft last year to save hundreds of millions of dollars a year in expenses by shifting Web indexing chores to Microsoft while Yahoo focuses on improving searching.
Yahoo Inc executives have said the company expects to complete the search technology integration in all 59 countries in which it operates by the second quarter of 2012.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced admission to on campus and full time MA Social Work (MSW) programme for the academic session 2010-2012.
Candidates holding Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university are eligible to apply for the programme.
All the candidates satisfying the minimum requirements need to pass in the written test, appear for group discussion and panel interview, IGNOU spokesperson Ravi Mohan said today.
The last date for receipt of completed applications at the university by hand or by post is August 7.
Student Handbook and Prospectus are available at IGNOU headquarters and can also be downloaded from the university’s website www.ignou.ac.in.
The programme would be conducted by the School of Social Work (SOSW), which was established in 2007.
”It aims at providing quality education in the areas of social work, HIV/AIDS, Philanthropy, Counselling and family studies by offering programmes leading to the award of Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees,” he said.
SOSW started the on-campus Masters Programme in Social Work with specialisation in Philanthropy at IGNOU headquarters here in July 2009.

The second round of allotments to MBBS/BDS Courses under All India Quota for the year 2010 commenced today. The allotment will extend till 12th August 2010 with UR Ranks up to 3760 being called for the counseling.
A total of 944 MBBS seats and 224 BDS seats were available when the second round of counseling commenced today morning. At the end of day 1, a total of 1159 seats remain, of which 935 are for MBBS and 224 for BDS.
There are 31 seats now vacant for MBBS in the five Medical Colleges in Kerala of which 3 each are at Government Medical Colleges at Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. There are 11 seats vacant at TD Medical College, Alappuzha, 9 at Thrissur and 5 at Kottayam at the end of day 1. For BDS, there are 18 seats vacant in the three Government Dental Colleges in Kerala.
