Mammootty extends olive branch to Thilakan

Alappuzha (Kerala), Feb 27 (IANS) Malayalam superstar Mammootty Saturday tried to make peace with Thilakan by saying he never called for a ban on the veteran actor in the industry and is willing to work with him.

“I have nothing against Thilakan and will certainly act with him. The issue with Thilakan will be resolved by AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes) soon. We never called for a ban of Thilakan. We will make no public statements in this regard and we are not interested in a media trial either,” Mammootty said.

Thilakan is in dispute with various film workers’ organisations, including the AMMA, for his utterances against some superstars and select directors.

He replied to a show-cause notice from the AMMA, saying he has done no wrong and the question of an apology does not arise.

The dispute led to a public slugfest with both sides taking a dig at each other.

Noted critic Sukumar Azhikode slammed superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal and asked them to stop acting and endorsing jewellery brands.

Azhikode said the two superstars should call it a day and remarked that if both of them come without make up, many people will faint.

To this AMMA president and comic actor Innocent retorted that if Azhikode is to endorse jewellery brands then people who buy it will return them.

Mammootty, trying to bring peace between two sides said since Thilakan expressed his inability to appear before AMMA March 1, then the movie association will give a new date set according to the actor’s convenience.

“Thilakan is an elder statesman of our fraternity and instead of keeping away from AMMA, he should be the guiding force to all of us,” said Mammootty.

Reacting to Mammootty’s statement, Thilakan said: “Honestly I have nothing against Mammootty and Mohanlal and I do respect their talents. I will talk to Mammootty if he calls me.”

Azhikode-AMMA row Intensifies

The row over the issue between Thilakan and AMMA reached another height on Thursday when the verbatim by AMMA president Innocent and orator Azhikode intensified. Innocent met the press persons at Kozhikode press club on Thursday afternoon and declared that Azhikode has no choice to intervene in the issue of actors. He alleged that the aim of Azhikode was mysterious. It is his style that attacking persons who decorate high positions in the society without reasons. It is like a starved fellow getting tasty food after some days in poverty. (Chakkakkoottan Kanda Pattinikaranepole). He was making the issue controversial to get the attention of the media as he was not in the limelight. It is not the ripe time to intervene on such issues. Better let him chant Ramanarayana… and build a good mind at the age of eighties. He advised Azhikode to have an introspection and acquire some good virtues before coming in as a mediator. He also alleged that now a days Azhikode spells bad language, even though he has written several books. He pointed out that a mediator should have calm words to pacify the concerned persons.

Hours later at 5 p.m in the evening Azhikode replied to Innoncent at the same venue, Kozhikode press club. He pooh poohed that advocating a fellow like Innocent to argue for Mammooty and Mohanlal showed their helplessness. Innocent does not know when to chant Ramanama… It is not for elders but for the devotees sans the age bar. The name `Innocent’ itself should tell him a fellow without any malice. But here he proved that the word `innocent’ has another meaning, `ignoramus’. (Paamaran) You can refer it in Dictionary. I am speaking for the fellows who were denied justice. Mammooty and Mohanlal are two huge decaying trees in the field of Malayalam cinema, not allowing even a bush to grow under it. Only a Prithwiraj could survive. But that too was through Tamil films. He admitted that for the last three days he spoke bad words and that was due to the communication with Mohanlal and Innocent. He hoped that he could make up the language within a week’s time.

Mohan Lal and Azhikode cross swords; Exchanges sharp words

The controversy over the issue between AMMA and veteran actor Thilakan took a new turn with superstar Mohanlal crossing swords with great orator and critic Sukumar Azhikode.

On Tuesday Azhikode claimed that Mohanlal had welcomed his mediation to end the row. He said, Mohanlal had called him from Dubai and requested his mediation to end the stalemate. But in the evening Mohanlal denied it. He said, it was a hallucination of the aged man, Azhikode.

In reply, Azhikode accused superstars of ruining the film industry by accepting high remuneration and not giving chance to newcomers and talented actors like Thilakan. Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, Azhikode said he had also called Thilakan and both sides had accepted his offer to mediate and bring them around a table.

Mohanlal dubbed Azhikode’s remarks as a joke by an elderly man and he knows little about the industry and there was no point in talking to him.

Meantime writer T. Padmanabhan criticised Azhikode saying he was crippled with inferiority complex and hence jealous at handsome actors like Mohanlal and Mammootty.

Director Satyan Anthikkad and actor Mamukoya also opposed Azhikode’s intervention.

Azhikode had lashed out at Mohanlal and said his love scenes in movies with sweet seventeen girls had become unpalatable. He advised Lal to stop acting in romantic scenes.

“It is the viewers who decide when an actor should stop his work. As part of the job actors should have to wear costumes and make up. We are not caring why Sukumar Azhikode apply die on his hair.”, Mohanlal said to media persons at the sets of his film `Oru Naal Varum’ in Thiruvanathapuram on Wednesday.

“Nobody will remember a person with the reason that he had written 40 books. It is the quality of good soul that keeps the fellow in mind. Azhikode does not own it.” Lal added.

In reply to the statement of Mohanlal, Azhikode said, ”Mohanlal is repeating the silly allegations against me. Because he is perplexed with the fear of degrading youth. He thinks that he is the King of the film world. Histrionics doesn’t only mean to present good characters, the heart should also be filled with goodness.” Azhikode was speaking to press persons at Payyannur

“I see the statements from Azhikode as those made by an old man” -Mohanlal

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 23 (IANS) The war of words in the Malayalam film industry, involving veteran actor Thilakan, superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal and others, continues unabated.

Thilakan is currently facing the heat from various film workers’ organisations, including the Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes (AMMA), for his utterances against some superstars and select directors.

He replied to a show-cause notice from the AMMA, saying he has done no wrong and the question of an apology does not arise.

Thilakan has been getting support from the Communist Party of India after a few legislators joined him on podium during public meetings in Kottayam and Ernakulam districts.

But the biggest cheer for him came Monday when veteran social critic Sukumar Azhikode lashed out at Mohanlal when he said the love scenes done by the superstar on screen have become unpalatable.

Azhikode also criticised Mohanlal for endorsing jewellery and found fault with him for coming to the defence of Mammootty.

Mohanlal told reporters here Tuesday that it should not be of concern to Azhikode if he was endorsing jewellery.

“I told him to leave me alone. Even Amitabh Bachchan endorses products. I see the statements from Azhikode as those made by an old man. He also advised (me) to settle the present controversy. I replied I have nothing to do on that and it has to be done by AMMA,” he said.

Thilakan has been asked to appear before the disciplinary committee of AMMA March 1.

“I am yet to decide on whether I should appear or not. Several people are trying to settle the issue and I am willing to discuss it on certain conditions, which I will make at an appropriate time,” he said.

Kerala Culture Minister M.A. Baby told reporters that there were a few film-based organisations and if all were willing, the government would intervene.
